Archibald "Archie" Grayling is a surgical consultant who currently works at Holby General Hospital. He is the father of junior doctor Sebastian Grayling.

Biography

In November 2016, he visited the ED and clashed with Dylan Keogh over the treatment of a teenage boy who was refusing to have an operation. It soon became clear to Dylan that Seb was getting distracted from his work due to his father being there. Archie later tried to get Seb to swap mentors, but Seb refused to give up working with Dylan. Also during the day, Alicia Munroe asked Archie if he'd like to go on a date with Lily Chao, to which he accepted. At the end of their shift they met and went out together. (CAS: "Thirty Years")

Two weeks later, Archie once again visited the department to examine a young boy following a lorry accident. He also chatted with Lily and they agreed to meet up for a coffee. At the end of the shift just as Archie was going back upstairs, he oversaw an argument between the doctors and nurses in reception about each others' competency. At this point, Archie revealed himself as the undercover inspector in the department and informed Elle that she'd have his report by the end of the week. (CAS: "About My Mother")

In December, Archie attended the staff Christmas party with Lily. Midway through, she agreed to go back to his. (CAS: "All I Want for Christmas Is You")

In October 2017, Lily applied for a post on a project Archie was running researching geriatric neurology. (CAS: Series 32, Episode 8) The following week, after he was impressed by her application, he offered her the post. She initially declined the offer but, after her boyfriend Iain broke up with her, she changed her mind. (CAS: Series 32, Episode 9) The following month, Lily pitched the project but thought she botched it after becoming distracted. Archie was later furious when he found out that Lily had been asked to lead the project rather than him. (CAS: Series 32, Episode 11)
